If you remember only one thing from this post, then let it be this: never ever get angry.
- Never get angry at your boss
- Never get angry at your wife
- Never get angry at anyone
I am not writing this post because of a personal experience, or because I am angry myself. However, I do see instances of anger ruining opportunities for lots of people.
You might be saying to yourself, well even Jesus got angry. Well, yes He did. His anger was of a righteous kind which accomplished a goal. Besides no one wants to start comparing themselves to Jesus or any of the Biblical prophets.
The anger, I refer to is;
- That which most of us feel, which springs from within us in a matter of seconds.
- That bit of uncontrollable rage.
- That blind irrational force, which makes you oblivious to the consequences of your actions.
The Hulk character from Marvel comics is the perfect example of this disease we all have. In the comics, Bruce Banner (the Hulk’s alter ego) is a pretty cheerful dude to be with when all is well. However, when he is angry, he turns into a big green giant who wants to fight somebody.
What can anger lead to?
The consequences getting angry are usually irreversible.
- You cannot take back what you have said or did.
- You may very well be forgiven, but it will be brought up against you in the future. For instance, you might not get the promotion you have craved for. You could be said to be a bad leader. You could be deemed a bad team player.
- You could be fired from your job. When your employees, employers or colleagues say hurtful things to you, remember that they are not talking about you as a person. They are referring to your work. These are two different entities. Do not equate one to mean the other
- Your moment of anger at your wife, leads to cracks in your seemly perfect marriage.
- Your moment of angry leads to a change in your relationships with others.
In the end, you can only wish that it had never happened at all. Do not let anger lead you into a hell you may not wish to be in. By the time you have realized what you have done ,it may be too late.
What can you do when you are angry?
- If you get upset, then just shut up. If you have nothing good to say to someone, then please be quiet. You will be seen as being more mature for refusing to give a reply to that which made you angry. Give a reply, and you bring yourself down to the aggressor’s level. Do not give your aggressors the satisfaction of seeing you heated up.
- Count to ten before giving a reply.
- Keep being enthusiastic.
- Remember your source of motivation. Why you do what you do (maybe it is because of your family back at home). What wakes you up in the morning. There is a very core reason everyone takes the abuse they receive at work, or home. Remembering that can take you through the bad days.
- Think on higher or pleasant things.
- Do not dish out any hurtful words yourself. If you do not like to be treated harshly, why do you want treat others that same way (Luke 6:31).
Keep a part of yourself that you never allow to be touched by either people’s criticism or their hurtful words.
The alternative to anger is to be pleasant, smile and being of good cheer. Isn’t that so much of a better option. Here is a video from Pharrell Williams urging you all to be happy.
Until next time, keep being happy.
