Tik tok, tik tok and a warm boom

Do not let the title of the post scare the heck out of you. We are not talking about an actual bomb here. What we are doing is to briefly review the mess that we are creating for ourselves with another kind of bomb. The climate change bomb.

It is my hope that this blog post moves you to act, and to think twice the next time you do something as selfish as littering.

I usually love to blog on something tech related. However, I felt that if I did not write this topic, then I would be doing an injustice to others.

I just finished watching the movie Geostorm. It was a nice movie, and all fiction. However, once you take a moment to think about the theme from the movie, and sequences in which the plot unfolded, there is some logic to the film. It stands to reason that the fiction depicted in the movie can be what we could all be living in. It might neither be soon nor in the exact manner depicted, still could it happen?

As you may have surmised by now, the theme of the movie was climate change. Climate change is the monster we are all responsible for creating.

So what is climate change? There are so many elaborate definitions that can be given. However the simplest you would want is that the world is getting hotter.

For instance;

Did you know that the last 100 years has been warmer than the last 10,000 years?

That is because the industrial revolution which gave birth to a lot of the inventions and conveniences we enjoy today started just before then. And that is when the climate bomb started ticking.

What is to blame for the World getting warmer? Greenhouse gases.

Greenhouse gases prevent the Sun’s rays from getting back to the Sun once it has visited the Earth. Thus, the Sun’s rays are now trapped within the atmosphere. This makes make our world hotter.

Who put the greenhouse gases up there? Well us actually.  These greenhouses gases are C2O, N2O, and CH4. I see you looking like me like, huh, what science mumbo jumbo has he written. Do not mind me, I am wearing my science cap now.

  • N20 stands for Nitrous Oxide
  • CH4 stands for Methane
  • And of course, you know C2O stands for Carbon Dioxide

Now you must be saying to yourself, what did we ever do to put those gases up there? It has been little things like littering, improper waste disposal, inefficient use of electricity and cutting down the plants at home. Now I see your eyes opening up, because you see the trend. All these are human activities. Things you and I do every single day.

Every body produces some greenhouse gas. Do you want to know how much you produce? Visit footprintcalculator.org to find out how much you produce.

Climate change causes many problems. I will only highlight one of the problems. Hunger. Crops die because of the scorching heat. And also the pests which kill crops, would not be washed away by the rain. Since there is no rain to speak of. Now I am not saying it has stopped raining. Just that instead of frequent rains, Climate change brings us more powerful and intense rain fall. And when it does rain, it comes as a flood. This is because intense rainfall has replaced frequent rain. In Africa, these problems are aggravated by poor infrastructure, little to no education on climate change and the improper disposal of solid waste.

Now you must be thinking to yourself. What little can I do to improve the situation? You could practice a green lifestyle. It costs you nothing at all. It is actually cheaper. A greener life style means you act in a way where you are conscious to not negatively affect your environment. You certainly cannot do the opposite. The opposite would be to;

  • Not care
  • Do nothing
  • Keep suffering in this ever swelling heat

Individually you can improve the situation by;

  • Disposing of your waste better
  • Walking more
  • Using the bicycle more
  • Planting trees
  • Recycle
  • Educate someone else(like I am doing right now)

Do not view climate change as the problem of the big, and wealthy nations of the world, and the United Nations.  Climate change is a united problem. Which means you are part of the solution. We are one people on one planet. Consequently we have one shared responsibility.

From this post, please remember phrases like;

  • Greenhouse emissions means a warmer planet
  • It is a collective responsibility
  • Practicing a greener life style is the best

I will keep posting articles not just to help you with the techy, and productivity side of things, but all the other good stuff as well. Until later, this Eli signing out.

Cheers.
